The hydraulic cement tile is a craft that dates back to the late 19th Century. It is commonly used to decorate houses, institutional buildings, museums, monasteries, embassies and hotels.

PROCESS
Once the colors are chosen, a paste is created with white marble dust, white cement, grit, and high quality pigments.

The paste goes into a plaster cast that includes a brass standoffs embedded in a frame where the mixture is poured. Each space is filled with a color. Prices vary depending on the number of colors in the design. When the plaster cast is filled completely, a cover of sand and cement is placed under a hydraulic press (hence the name) that compresses the tile. Then the plaster caste is removed carefully and immersed in water for 24 hours. In order to cure the cement perfectly, the tiles are sprayed with water and stored in a chamber for 28 days.
