Zaytoun(meaning Olives in Arabic)is a small business distributing fair trade, pesticide-free extra virgin olive oil from Palestine. We sold almost 15000 litres of fair trade Palestinian olive oil in 2004, and this year we are looking to expand our distribution to match an increasing demand from shops and solidarity groups around the UK.

2004 was Zaytouns first year in business and we received a lot of media attention, and our initiative was covered by the Guardian, The New Statesman and the Big Issue amongst others. Our clients have been health food shops, fair trade shops and wholesalers, as well as Palestinian and fair trade solidarity groups. We continue to take new orders as well as many repeat orders from all of these clients, and feedback on the quality of our oil has been excellent. It has a pepper taste characteristic of oils produced from healthy, fresh olives. Zaytouns oil is a premium product and we engage in a continuing process of quality testing and agricultual training with our producers.

The process for producing extra virgin olive oil is labor intensive and costly. It is necessary for producers to know that there is a market at the end of the process to make the input worthwhile. We would be very grateful if you could send us your orders by mid February for the April consignment of olive oil. If you are able to give us an estimate of volumes of oil you will be ordering in the second half of 2005 this will help us prepare our projection for autumn deliveries.

We will be in touch again later in the year regarding the other Palestinian products which Zaytoun would like to sell this year, including olive oil soap, herbs including thyme, couscous, almonds and olive twig baskets. We are also actively working with the producers to secure international fair trade and organic status for their products this year.
