It was in 1980 that an advertisement appeared in national newspapers inviting individuals or groups to apply to the independent broadcasting authority, the iba, an organisation which was set up in the fifties to monitor, develop and control television and which had radio tacked on to it in 1973, for the franchise known as ayrshire, arran and cumbrae, which was to get its own local radio station. There were several determined bids for this franchise from a variety of groups and individuals but eventually the shortlist formed a straight fight between radio clyde, the Glasgow station with a proven track record in broadcasting and finance, a newspaper group headed by robin knox-johnston the yachtsman from troon, and radio ayrshire, a group of business and professional people with their roots in ayrshire. The latter group won the franchise largely because it was able to demonstrate to the iba that it knew what ayrshire needed and was likely to respond to.
