Stree Shakti UK is enabling buyers in the UK to purchase quality silk quilts and cushion covers directly form the village women in India whose skills are helping to lift their families out of poverty. With years of experience in making quilts, this line of silk products is now being introduced to the UK market. The benefit of buying products from this fairtrade cooperative is that each quilt is made with special attention to detail (hand-quilted) , and can be customised to an extent that large factory operations cannot match (ie. dying fabric to match) . As the products are being shipped directly from Stree Shakti (which literally means 'Women Power' in Hindi) , the prices are kept to a minimum. Each purchase gives the buyer an uniquely beautiful product, while at the same time directly benefiting the women of Stree Shakti.
About the manufacturer: Established 7 years ago as a village cooperative, Stree Shakti has grown to serve 70 + women as an income generating opportunity for underprivileged women in the rural community of Dehra Dun, India. The program aims to empower women to become income earners in their family by providing them with the resources and training for producing and selling quality products. With design and market assistance from our staff, the women stitch quilts and cushion covers, which are sold throughout the local community and abroad. The women receive the full benefits of their labor and are able to produce a sustainable income to ensure proper education, health and hygiene for their family and children. The program also includes a health focus for the women with regular medical check UPS and immunizations and daily English and Computer training.
